MINERS KILLED IN WEST VIRGINIA
Two miners, who worked at Patriot Coal's Brody No. 1 mine in Boone County, West Virgina were killed Monday night. The victims have been identified as 48-year old Eric Legg of Twilight and 46-year old Champmanville resident Gary Hensley. Preliminary investigations show the accident may have been caused by a "coal outburst," which is a sudden outburst of coal and gas.
OAKLAND MAN ARRESTED FOR SECOND-DEGREE ASSAULT
Oakland resident Charles Wilson Lovell III is facing second-degree assault charges, following an incident on Sines Cemetery Drive. Lovell is accused of assaulting and strangling a woman. The victim did not require medical treatment, and Lovell was jailed to await a bond hearing.
KEYSER ATHLETIC COMPLEX DISCUSSED
It's about time for the annual payment on the Keyser Athletic Complex, and since the first one came due in 2009, Keyser High School has not been able to make a full payment of nearly $280,000. Mineral County Board of Education members have suggested some drastic measures be taken, including selling off the lights and bleachers, and playing only afternoon games there.
GRANT ANNOUNCED FOR HOSPITAL
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett recently announced a $3 million Economic Growth Initiative Grant at Somerset Hospital, supporting both the emergency and women's health facilities there. Renovation plans will create a state of the art environment, and Governor Corbett-who recently visited the facility-says the newly renovated areas will serve as a template for further enhancements.
ACM HOLDS COMMENCEMENT ON SATURDAY
About 375 students will graduate from Allegany College of Maryland on Saturday at the Cumberland Campus. Associate degrees and certificates will be awarded to members of the 2014 class at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Physical Education Building. There will be a reception following the ceremonies in the College Center.
MOUNTAIN RIDGE SETS BACCALAUREATE SERVICE
The Mountain Ridge High School Fellowship of Christian athletes and students are sponsoring a baccalaureate service to honor the school's class of 2014. The service will be this Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Mountain Ridge theatre. All graduating seniors are invited to be part of the service. Members of the senior class will be leading the service by speaking performing and singing, and a senior slide show will also be featured.
FSU ALUMNUS TO RECEIVE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Joseph Lambert, director of Information Management for the Central Intelligence Agency and a member of the Frostburg State University Class of 1979, will be presented with the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. The honor will be presented during the 144th commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 22nd, during the 9:30 a.m. ceremony for the Colleges of Business and Education.
ACPS HOLDS ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS BANQUET
The 31st annual Allegany County Public Schools' Achievement awards banquet was held recently at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. Mia Perlozzo-Cross, of the board of education, says the event honors graduating seniors in the top 12 per cent of their class. Ms. Cross says the students are recognized for academics, accomplishments in the arts, and for demonstrated leadership ability.
INMATE DID NOT SUFFER LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES
The inmate stabbed at MCI-Hagerstown Sunday night did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. The 46-year old victim was admitted to Meritus Medical Center, following the incident that happened just before 8 p.m., according to Mark Vernarelli of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
DEPUTIES SEEKING MISSING WOMAN
Washington County authorities are looking for a woman, who went missing after learning she was wanted by law enforcement. Megan Marie Sweeney, who also goes by Megan Marie Powers, was last seen by family members in June of 2012. She is described as 5-feet, three inches tall, 130 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
FRANKLIN COUNTY PLANE CRASH INJURES CHILD
A single-engine plane crashed in Franklin County, Pennsylvania this past weekend, and one child was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The crash happened in front of the Roxbury Holiness Camp. There was no word on the condition of the adult. The crash is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Aviation Administration.
LAWSUIT FILED IN TOUGH MUDDER DEATH
Maryland resident Mita Sengupta has filed suit on behalf of her son, who drowned along an obstacle course in West Virgina. Twenty-eight year old Ellicott City resident Avishek Sengupta died a day after he was pulled from the water pit of one obstacle. In her suit Ms. Sengupta says Tough Mudder, LLC failed to follow basic safety precautions.
