Sex Offender Wanted By Authorities

Registered sex offender Paul Luther Kennedy is being sought by authorities for an alleged violation of probation. Anyone with information on his whereabouts, is asked to contact local law enforcement authorities. Kennedy is wanted on an open arrest warrant.

 

Water Main Break Reported

Crews were on the scene of a 12-inch water main break last night, in the vicinity of Allegany College of Maryland on Willowbrook Road. Service was interrupted to the area around the Cumberland Country Club, the Allegany College dorm apartments, and the Cumberland Meadows apartment complex. The break caused an emergency shutdown in the area.

 

County To Apply for Funding

Allegany County is applying for Block Grant Funding from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to access unspent federal funds that have been set aside for the state of Maryland to address damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in October of last year. If successful, the county intends to use the funds to buy additional properties in a mapped flood plain. Over the past two decades, over 250 homeowners chose to participate in the county's voluntary flood buyout program.

 

Police Investigate Vandalism Complaints

The Cumberland City Police Department is investigating 13 complaints of vandalism to vehicles, primarily on the West Side of Cumberland. A group of people were seen driving down the street in a light blue or turquoise station wagon, throwing eggs and flour at cars parked in the Fayette and Washington Street areas, along with Karns and Patterson Avenues. If anyone has information, they are asked to contact police at (301)-777-1600.

 

Assault Complaint Investigated

Patterson Avenue resident Kody Austin Martin was charged with second degree assault, following an incident early yesterday morning. The victim said she wanted her live-in boyfriend, Martin, to leave the residence as they had been fighting all day. She also told police he had assaulted her several times. Martin was charged, processed and released on personal recognizance, pending trial in District Court.

 

Visitation Slated for Bestpitch

Local labor leader James "Jim" Bestpitch died Saturday at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center at the age of 62. Visitation will take place Thursday at the Adams Family Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 7.

 

Man Uninjured in Single-Vehicle Accident

New Creek, West Virginia resident Kenneth Umstot was uninjured in a single-vehicle accident in the 16000-block of Maryland Highway this past weekend. Umstot drove his truck off of the roadway and into a ditch due to severe fog conditions. He was not transported to the hospital, and police are reminding residents to be cautious when driving during severe weather conditions.

 

Unemployment Rate Drops in County

The unemployment rate in Allegany County dropped to its lowest point in five years in November; the rate was 7 per cent. In November of 2008, the rate was 6.3 per cent and in December of 2008, it was 7.1 per cent. In 2008, the average number of people in the labor force was 35,562; in 2013, that number grew to 36,396.

 

Anniversary of Crash Remembered

Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of the B-52 plane, armed with nuclear warheads, that crashed in Grantsville. Three of the five crew members died; the two that survived are now deceased. The incident happened during a heavy snow storm, as the vertical fin of the plane separated from the body during weather-related turbulence. Dean Hillegas was a reporter on board a helicopter that found the body of the tail gunner, Tech Sgt. Melvin Wooten. His body was found in Salisbury, Pennsylvania, nearly 15 miles from the crash site.

 

Gas Prices Fluctuate in 2013

For the fifth straight year, New Year's Day brought higher gas prices than the year before. This year, on January 1st, a record was set for the highest price for a gallon of gasoline. Marylanders ended the year paying an average of $3.46 per gallon. Triple "A" of Maryland has a list of the lowest gas prices in the state.

 

State of Emergency Remains in Effect for West Virginia

A state of emergency was lifted in parts of several West Virginia Counties, as a result of contamination from the Freedom Industries Plant in Charleston. About 300,000 people are affected by the leak of a chemical, used in coal preparation. A "do-not-use" water order was in effect since about 5 p.m. last Thursday, when tests confirmed the chemical was in the water at the Kanawha Valley water treatment plant. It could still be days before the ban is completely lifted.  

 

Superintendent Eyeing Instructional Time

State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jim Phares says that, even though schools in West Virginia started earlier, some school systems may not meet the 180-day instructional mark this year. State law now requires school to end by June 8th, but a new Senate bill will allow classes to continue through much of June.
