Robbery Suspects In Custody

Literally within minutes, two suspects were captured after robbing Steve's Pharmacy in the Bel Air Plaza yesterday morning. One of the suspects entered the pharmacy, stuck an unknown object in the back of an elderly female customer, and demanded pain-killing prescription medications from the pharmacist. Two Cumberland men-36 year old Andrew Vincent Crescenzo and 29-year old John Mark Self-were quickly taken into custody in the area of Route 28 in West Virginia. The investigation by  both West Virginia and Maryland authorities is continuing.


Delegation Will Not Attend Meeting

Members of the Western Maryland Delegation to the General Assembly won't be attending a meeting to be held by AFSCME representatives Monday at Allegany College. The meeting is being held to address inmate-on-correctional officer violence at the North Branch Correctional Institution. The delegation had a meeting with the union, correctional officers, and their families earlier in the month. Local representatives also supported a letter, sent to Governor O'Malley and correctional services staff at the state level, which outlined specific concerns the union had with, what it called, "the deteriorating situation at NBCI."


Boswell Man Killed in Collision

Boswell resident William Taylor died in a collision with a tri-axle truck in Quemahoning Township Tuesday afternoon. Taylor was driving west on Route 30, and hit the truck, which was disabled and parked alongside the road. He was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, but was later pronounced dead. The Pennsylvania State Police are continuing the investigation.


Man Held on $5,000 Bond for Assault

A Cumberland man is being held on $5,000 bond, after being accused in an assault incident earlier in the month. Brian T. Garlitz allegedly choked and tackled a woman during a mutual assault. City Police were the ones who filed charges, and an arrest warrant was issued from District Court. Garlitz received an initial appearance there, where bond was set.


Somerset Man Missing

An elderly Somerset man has been missing since Monday afternoon, and authorities are on the lookout for him. Eighty-two year old Bob Coleman left his home about 3 p.m. Monday, and never returned. He was said to be driving a light blue, 2003 Hyundai Accent, with New Mexico license plates. He is 6-feet tall, and weighs about 160 pounds. He has gray hair and blue eyes. After School Programs Begin September 9th

Both Braddock and Washington Middle Schools will once again offer after school programming during the 2013-2014 school year. Provided by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant, the after school program provides academic opportunities along with enrichment activities designed to support students' learning and development. Train Pull For Charities Benefits Four Groups

The Allegany County Train Pull for Charities, on Saturday, September 7th at the Western Maryland Station, benefits four separate charities in the area, including the Special Olympics, Friends Aware, the Ali Ghan Shrine Transportation unit, and The Childrens' League, formerly the Allegany County League for Crippled Children. Cathy Growden, director of The Childrens' League, says they are looking for team members. The group has participated in the train pull for the last four years.

Hagerstown Man Identified

The body of the man found beside a roadway in Hagerstown this past weekend has been identified as 40-year old Kenneth Leon Flook. The body had been next to the bridge that crosses the Conococheague Creek between Hagerstown and Clear Spring. Flook was last seen alive this past Friday evening. The body is at the Office of the Coroner in Baltimore, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is continuing.


Head Start Cuts Smaller than Expected

Federal sequestration spending cuts had a smaller impact on Maryland's Head Start Early Childhood Education Program. The state lost funding for about 460 spots in Head Start Centers this year, representing a 3.6 per cent of the 12,700 children served. Earlier this year, Maryland U.S. Senator Ben Cardin estimated that up to 900 Head Start spots would be trimmed. Across the country, more than 57,000 positions were lost, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.


Men Sentenced in U.S. District Court

Three Martinsburg residents were recently sentenced in U.S. District Court in Martinsburg on drug charges. Michael Shaver Payton and Dehaven Darnell Craig, both 28 years old, entered pleas of guilty to "aiding and abetting the distribution of 44.1 grams of crack cocaine. They face five, and up to 40 years imprisonment and a fine of $2 million each. A co-defendant, 24-year old Akeylah Humphrey pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. Humphrey faces up to 20 years imprisonment and a one-million dollar fine.
