Grand Jury May Hear Case

Allegany County Commission President Mike McKay, along with several concerned citizens, have requested a grand jury probe into the finances of the McCoole Volunteer Fire Company. Letters have been written to State's Attorney Michael Twigg, asking for an investigation. The company, which had only one truck and four firefighters when operations ceased, has been the focus of community concern, and the fact that letters had been written, were disclosed during this week's meeting at the McCoole Cornerstone Ministries.


Edwards Named to Panel

State Senator George Edwards is one of three Western Maryland legislators who will serve on a joint commission to study safety and security issues in the state's correctional facilities. Cumberland is home to two state correctional facilities, and the other two Western Maryland legislators are from the Frederick and Washington County areas, which have three correctional facilities. The commission was named in the wake of a scandal at the Baltimore City Detention Center.


Laptops Stolen From FSU

About 80 laptop computers, valued at over $35,000, were stolen from Frostburg State University earlier this month. The units were taken from the Guild Center of the school, and the thefts occurred sometime between June 4th and 5th. Anyone having information concerning the incident is asked to contact the Allegany/County Mineral County CrimeSolvers group at (301)-722-4300. The investigation is continuing.


Man Jailed After Fight With Ex-Wife

Buffalo Mills, Pennsylvania resident Leonard James Forbes is in jail, following a fight with his ex-wife and her boyfriend in Londonderry Township this past weekend. Forbes faces numerous charges, and remains jailed on $85,000 bond. He was arrested after he drove his vehicle into the victims' vehicles, and allegedly discharged a shotgun into the woods. Also on the scene was the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team.


Keyser to Improve Over a Dozen Streets

The city of Keyser has executed a contract with Liller Brothers Paving in Westernport to patch, repair and partially pave over a dozen streets there. Liller is working under an umbrella contract it won as part of a major paving contract completed last September and October.


Two Mineral County Schools Have Top Attendance Rates

The Frankfort Intermediate School and New Creek Primary School have the top attendance rates in Mineral County for the 2012-2013 school year. Frankfort finished with a 95.7 per cent attendance rate, with New Creek having a 95.6 rate. New Creek has surpassed the county goal every year since it was established several years ago.


Department Extinguishes Vehicle Fire

The city of Cumberland Fire Department extinguished a fully-involved vehicle fire early yesterday morning in the 800-block of Columbia Avenue. City Police also responded, but the vehicle was determined to be a total loss. No other property damage was reported, and the incident remains under investigation. Preliminary indications are that the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
