Power Outage in Downtown Cumberland


The Allegany County Office of Emergency Services is reporting an "on again/off again" power situation in the downtown Cumberland area today. Service went out around 12:45 a.m. today, and was back on at 3:30 a.m. A spokesman says the power then went off again. There is no word on when power will be restored, nor how many customers are being affected by the situation.



Man Held on $100,000 Bond in Stabbing Incident


A Cumberland man is being held on $100,000 bond, in connection with a stabbing incident Friday evening in the 100-block of West Second Street. Forty-seven year old Phat Hue Chung is accused of stabbing another man in the chest and left hand. The two were roommates, and Chung was persuaded by a witness to drop the knife. He received an initial appearance in Allegany County District Court. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.



Cumberland Fugitive Nabbed in Romney


A man who was wanted for being a fugitive from justice in Cumberland, was recently captured in Romney, with the use of a K9 unit. John Patrick Thomas Wright fled while being served with two felony warrants, but was quickly captured on Endler Avenue, when a K9 officer found Wright and bit him. Wright is being charged in West Virginia with two grand larceny warrants, and with being a fugitive from justice in Cumberland. Wright was treated for the dog bite, and held on $3,000 bond at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail.



Six Charged in Trespassing Incident


Six people were issued citations late last week, for breaking into the old Cumberland Concrete Building in the 400-block of North Center Street. One person was caught, fleeing from the building and was arrested. The suspect told police that several of his friends were still inside the building. Charged in the incident were 21-year old Tyler Benjamin Cooper, 24-year old Ashleee Pleasant Lopez, Marty Patrick Mullenax, Just in Michael Wagoner, Jared Nicolas Woods,and 18-year old April Lynn Cheek, all from Cumberland. They were issued citations for trespassing, and additional charges are pending.



Two Arrested for Possession of Oxycodone


Two men were released on their own recognizance, following a traffic stop on Interstate 68 Westbound, near the Maryland Avenue exit on Saturday. Twenty-one year old Jonathan Douglas George and 22-year old Robert Allen Grady, both of Barton, were stopped for a traffic violation. A consent search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of suspected oxycodone. Both were taken to Cumberland Police headquarters for processing, then to Allegany County District Court, where they were released.



Water Line Replacement Work Being Done


Beginning today, and lasting for about three weeks, water line replacement work is being done in the vicinity of South Centre Street, between Harrison and Baltimore Streets. The work will be done between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. daily, Monday through Thursday, weather permitting. Motorists should expect delays and flagmen in the area.



Westernport Construction Closes Part of Main Street


Due to the construction on Main Street in Westernport, Oakview Drive and Philos Avenue will be closed this week, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Residents are advised to use the Route 36 Access Road across the Waverly Street Bridge to reach Riordan Road and Lincoln Drive.



Maryland Employers Add Jobs, But Rate Remains Unchanged


Maryland employers added 4700 jobs last month, but the state unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.6 per cent. Increases in the private sector were in the construction, financial activities and in the manufacturing fields. Government agencies cut 400 jobs, but thanks to strong earlier gains, the state outpaced all but three others for its rate of growth so far this year.



Man Arrested for Five Crimes in West Virginia and Pennsylvania


The West Virginia State Police say that criminal charges have been filed against Larry A. Barnett, in connection to five breaking and entering incidents in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. They were able to tie Barnett to the incidents through blood matches, and he is currently in the Allegheny County Jail in Pennsylvania, awaiting extradition to West Virginia.
