Suspect Arrested in Shooting Incident
A twenty-five year old Cumberland man has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident on Independence Street early Monday evening. Antonio "AJ" Fagan, Jr. is accused of firing a gun three times at Rodricus Wilkes; a medical examination determined Wilkes had been struck in the back of the head with a blunt object and was not hit by the gunfire.
Council Member Denied Appeal
Everett Borough Council member Charles Karns has been denied an appeal on a conviction for DUI-General Impairment. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court's decision means that Councilman Karns will receive jail time, when sentenced by Judge Thomas Ling within the next several weeks.
Single Vehicle Accident Kills Bedford County Man
Bedford County resident Travis Brown was killed in a single vehicle accident early Sunday morning in Huntingdon County. Brown lost control of his vehicle along Eagle Foundry Road in Carbon township. The vehicle hit several trees after veering off the road. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.
Hagerstown Man Resentenced
A Hagerstown man has had his prison sentence lowered to 120 months, following an appeal, based on the fact that prior convictions did not qualify him as an armed career criminal. Robert John Summerville III had been convicted of a number of crimes, including a second-degree assault charge in Allegany County in February of 2005. He was initially sentenced to 262 months imprisonment in July of last year, but the sentence was appealed.
Domestic Disturbance Leads to Drug Citation
A domestic disturbance led to a citation for marijuana possession for a Rose Hill Avenue resident Monday morning. Police were called to the 500-block of Rose Hill Avenue, and interviewed one of those involved, 19-year old James Elmer Milton. While being questioned, he removed a small baggie of suspected marijuana from his pocket.
Upward Bound Program Accepting Applications
The Upward Bound Program at Frostburg State University is accepting applications. This pre-college program is designed to assist 89 qualified Allegany County students in developing the skills and motivation necessary for success in both high school and college.
Former Sheriff To Be Sentenced in May
Former Jefferson County Sheriff Bobby Shirley will be sentenced May 23rd for his role in the beating of bank robbery suspect Mark Daniel Haines. Federal prosecutors are asking the victim to be in court for the sentencing. Shirley, who resigned his position, pleaded guilty in January to violating Haines' civil rights after a 2010 car chase.
Thurmont Man Dies From Fall
A 34-year old Thurmont, Maryland resident died in a 100-foot fall from High Rock in Washington County on Monday. Michael Paul Liller jumped to a rock, lost his balance and fell, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Authorities believe it was an accident. There has been a series of falls or intentional jumps from High Rock over the years. Caution is urged, as graffiti and effects of weather have made the surfaces of the rocks slippery.
Hagerstown Man Shot; Suspect Arrested
The Hagerstown Police Department has arrested a suspect in Monday's shooting of another person in the 100-block of Bethel Street. Shots were fired just before 7 p.m., and officers discovered a male victim, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his right leg. He was taken to Meritus Medical Center for treatment. Bethel Street resident John Anthony Leonard, along with three other men were identified and arrested for weapons violations originating from the incident. The case remains under investigation.
Bridge Work Set in West Virginia
Repairs could begin as early as Monday on a bridge over Dillon's Run in the town of Capon Bridge, West Virginia. The bridge is on Cacapon River Road, and is located at the intersection with U.S. Route 50. Traffic on Route 50 won't be affected, but there will be narrow, one-lane conditions on the bridge throughout the course of the two-month project.
