Pair Rescued From Deep Creek Lake
The Maryland Natural Resources Police rescued two men from Deep Creek Lake yesterday afternoon. Dunbar, Pennsylvania resident Thomas Soberdash and Robert Ebbert of Fairfield, Iowa were ice fishing on Deep Creek Lake, when they reportedly fell through the ice in the vicinity of Rock Lodge Road. They were rescued and taken to Garrett Memorial Hospital; they were listed in stable condition. The victims were in the lake for about 20 minutes, before being rescued.
State Board To Meet on WVSDB
Later this month, the West Virginia State Board of Education will meet to discuss costs associated with whether to relocate the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind in Romney, rather than renovate the campus. The Board will meet on February 13th and 14th in Charleston. The same firm that has been involved in the renovation of the Romney campus, has been hired to determine the cost to build new schools in another location. WVSDB has about 120 students from 30 counties across the state. The school is the second largest employer in Hampshire County.
Cable Rates to Increase, Despite Mayor's Efforts
Atlantic Broadband intends to raise its rates for basic cable services, despite a letter from Mayor Brian Grim. For its part, Atlantic Broadband says it will hold to increased fees, because of increased costs in programming and operating expenses. Prices will go up approximately 2 to 5 per cent.
Man Charged with Abuse of Corpse
Somerset County resident Michael Moore has been charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with, or fabricating evidence, along with terroristic threats and intimidation of victims. The body of 53-year old Friedens resident Frankie Allen Sass was moved from Moore's apartment to the Somerset Borough location where he was found. The Pennsylvania State Police say Sass was a known drug user, who had disappeared in the past. A person contacted police Sunday, to say Moore and his girlfriend needed his help to move Sass out of their apartment; he was also told Sass was drunk and unconscious. A preliminary hearing for Moore has been set for next Tuesday.
Authorities Seek Man for Probation Violation
The Mineral County Sheriff's Office is looking for a 25-year old man, who is wanted for violation of probation. Allegany County authorities are also looking for Ahmed Shakeem Barmore, for failure to appear. He is known to have ties to the Allegany County, Keyser, Piedmont and Baltimore areas. Second Warrant Initiative Launched
The Cumberland Police Department's Safe Streets Program launched a second warrant initiative last week, to apprehend numerous individuals, wanted throughout the tri-state area. The mission and partnership between the Cumberland City Police Department and deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff's Department resulted in the arrest of 25 individuals and 43 arrest warrants served within a five-day period. The objective of the Safe Streets program is to reduce crime and criminal activity within the city of Cumberland and surrounding areas.
Theft of Wallet Investigated
A wallet was stolen from the Star Lite Skating Rink earlier in the month, and a bank card from the wallet was used the next day at WalMart in LaVale. Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact TFC Thomas at the LaVale barrack. The number is (301)-729-2101.
Man Arrested in Disturbance
Cumberland City Police are investigating a reported disturbance on Maryland Avenue yesterday, and arrested 46-year old Mark Smith. He was one of the parties involved in the incident, and police are also investigating whether an assault took place. As officers tried to speak with him, he became uncooperative and refused to speak with them, and tried to run from them at one point. He was apprehended and eventually released pending trial in Allegany County District Court. He was charged with one count of failure to obey a lawful order.
Ski Theft Reported at Wisp
The Maryland State Police Barrack at McHenry is investigating the theft of a pair of skis from the Wisp resort on Sunday. The skis are multi-colored Volkl Ledge skis, which were taken from the main lodge ski rack. Anyone who witnessed the crime or has any information is asked to contact TFC Nelson at the McHenry barrack; that number is (301)-387-1101. A reward may be offered for the return of the skis.
Governor to Deliver "State of the State" Address
Governor Martin O'Malley will deliver the "State of the State" address today, to a joint session of the legislature, and is expected to address gun control, wind energy, and an effort to repeal the death penalty. Another issue is increasing transportation revenue, either through an increased gasoline tax, or a sales tax on gasoline.
