Body Found Near Oldtown
The investigation has begun into the death of a man, whose body was found in a wooded area near Oldtown two days ago. The body has tentatively been identified as 37-year old Lewis Joy of Flintstone. Hunters discovered the body near old town on Saturday. Investigators found a hooded sweatshirt, tied between two trees about 28 feet off the ground, near where the body was found. He was last seen on October 13th, and it was also discovered he had two outstanding warrants for his arrest in Allegany County. A vehicle being used by Joy was found abandoned in the woods at a gun club on Cresap Mill Road at Oldtown Road. The body was found by hunters, not far from where the truck was located.
Three Hurt, One Hospitalized in Carriage Accident
One person was flown to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown, and two others were injured, when two horses, attached to a sleigh at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort on Sunday. Ernie Alwine was taken to the hospital, and his daughter was injured in the mishap. The horses were startled at the beginning of the Grand Illumination Ceremony at the facility. Two adults jumped from the moving sleigh. Alwine was listed in stable condition Sunday night.
Cumberland Man Arrested in Burglary Incident
Nineteen year old Cumberland resident Ernest Mack was charged with several counts of burglary, assault, disorderly conduct and malicious destruction of property, following an incident on Virginia Avenue Sunday. Mack allegedly entered an apartment and took a video game. When confronted by the resident, Mack allegedly showed a handgun and pointed it at the victim. He broke back into the apartment, and was later discovered at another home. He was held on $25,000 bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
Woman Arrested for Assault, Resisting Arrest
Twenty-one year old Cumberland resident Detonia Degross faces assault and resisting arrest charges, following an incident Sunday at the Banneker Garden Apartments. She was in an argument with another person when police arrived. She also allegedly damaged that person’s car, and tried to push an officer out of the way, to get to the person. She was charged, following a hearing at the District Court Commissioners’ Office, and released on personal recognizance.
Garrett County Home Burglarized
The McHenry Barrack of the Maryland State Police is seeking information on a burglary that took place on the Zeddock Miller Road last Saturday. A person or persons force open a basement door, and stole tools from the home. Anyone with information is asked to contact TFC Nelson at the McHenry Barrack. That number is (301)-387-1101. A reward may be offered in the case.
Hampshire County Water Leak Found
Hampshire County authorities found the mystery leak they have been searching for, since November 9th. The leak was found on Sand Hill Road, and was leaking into the woods nearby. Service was returned to residents of the old and new Sunrise area of Romney. A boil water advisory is in effect for water taken from a 500-gallon tanker, which was parked on Summit Drive for residents’ use.
State Police Pilot to Retire
Following careers in both the Maryland State Police and United States Coast Guard Pilot David Cooper will be retiring on Friday. Cooper, who was born in Cumberland, was a pilot for the Trooper Five Medevac helicopter. His family lived in Keyser, and his father was in the Marine Corps at the time, so the family moved around. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ahsland Virginia. Cooper became a Coast Guard pilot in 1971, and began his career of rescuing people and saving lives.
Republicans Call on Mooney to Step Down\
Some Maryland Republicans are calling on state party chairman Alex Mooney to resign. The state GOP saw many of its candidates defeated in the November general election, and many of the ballot questions that most Republicans opposed, were approved. The question is whether Mooney can be forced out in the middle of his four-year term. The state Republican convention will take place this Friday and Saturday in Howard County.
