Traffic, Rock Slides, Evacuations Resulting from Sandy
Portions of Interstate 68 westbound are closed, as the result of severe conditions and the fact there were several jackknifed tractor trailers in the area last night. The Maryland State Police also advised residents of the Locust Grove area to evacuate, due to rising water and flooding in the area. A mandatory evacuation was ordered for Hyndman Borough residents, east of the railroad. the evacuation was voluntary for all other areas. Shelters were set up at the Hope for Hyndman Charter School, the Londonderry Township Building and the Hyndman Grange Hall. The snow emergency plan is in effect I-68, from Clarysville to the Garrett County line.
Cold Case Suspect Arrested in Cumberland
A Cumberland resident has been arrested in connection with a Florida case, stemming from 2001. Thirty-nine year old David Ray McMannis was arrested in Cumberland last Friday; forty-three year old Phillip Gavin Barr is still being sought in connection with the murder of 19-year old Tara Danielle Sidarovich of Punta Gorda, Florida. She disappeared from her home on October 1, 2001; her skeletal remains were found on July 12, 2002 in Charlotte County, Florida. McMannis is awaiting extradition to Florida. Sheriff Bill Cameron commended the efforts of a number of agencies, including the FBI and the local C3I unit for providing what he called "invaluable contributions" to the cold case team during the ongoing investigation.
Cumberland Man Charged with Assault
A Cumberland man is being held on $75,000 bond, following a domestic assault over the weekend. Twenty-four year old Leroy Johnson and 20-year old Sarah Whiteman had been arguing; Johnson allegedly pushed Whiteman out of the vehicle on McMullen Highway while it was still moving. Ms. Whiteman was taken to an apartment on Bowling Street, where Johnson arrived, kicked the door in, and continued to assault her. Ms. Whiteman was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment, while Johnson was charged with first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He was taken to a District Court Commissioner, where bond was set.
Pennsylvania Woman Arrested for DUI
Manns Choice resident Tabatha Louise Miller was arrested at the Corriganville Sheetz over this past weekend. The Maryland State Police say Ms. Miller agreed to, but failed, all three of the standardized field sobriety tests. She was then arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, processed and released by an Allegany County District Court Commissioner on personal recognizance.
Manassas Man Arrested for Destruction of Property
Manassas, Virginia resident Jeremy Veney was arrested on Sunday for an alleged destruction of property incident at the CBIZ parking lot. Veney is accused of breaking the wooden arm of the parking device at the lot. While Veney admitted to grabbing the arm, he was unaware that he caused it to break. He was also taken into custody on an outstanding bench warrant for failure to pay a traffic fine from Frederick County, Maryland. He was later released on his own recognizance.
Somerset County Couple Facing Bedford Burglary Charges
Somerset County residents Larissa Dneaster and Robert Friedline are accused of stealing more than $2,000 from a home on Cortland Road in Bedford County. The two allegedly broke into the home several times from June through October. They are also accused of stealing $17,000 worth of jewelry from a home on Sarver Road in Somerset County last week.
Injured Woman Identified
A woman, who was hit by a car in Addison Township over the weekend, has been identified as Sarah Ankrom of Markleysburg. She was hit by a car, while lying in the road on National Pike, State Route 40, near Newberry Road. Two bystanders tried to stop traffic before she was hit. She suffered injuries to the head and neck area, and is being treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
