Repairs Could Take Until Thursday
Power should be back on in the area today or tomorrow, but in some areas of Allegany County, it could be Thursday before utilities are restored. There are still several thousand customers without power in the Allegany, Mineral and Garrett County area. The death toll from the Friday storm has now reached 6 statewide; Governor Martin O’Malley has declared a state of emergency.

Health Department Urges Precautions During Heat Wave
The Allegany County Health Department is urging residents to do what they can to protect themselves and other individuals from extreme heat. Extended periods of high temperatures are not only uncomfortable, but prolonged exposure can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion and the most serious-heat stroke. If you have a neighbor, friend or family member who may be especially vulnerable to serious heat related health problems, check on them frequently, and make sure they have air conditioning r other cooling options available to them. Also, bring pets inside, and make sure they, too, have an adequate supply of food and water.

Couple Charged with CDS Possessioin
Westernport resident Joshua Smith and 22-year old Jessica Lynn Smith of Piedmont were arrested by Allegany County Sheriff’s deputies and have been charged with various drug counts. A quantity of  cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, pills and drug paraphernalia was recovered, and Joshua Smith was held on $25,000 bond. Jessica Smith was released, pending trial.

Oldtown Man Hospitalized Following Accident; Charges Pending
An Oldtown resident was taken to the hospital, after he was found lying in the road at Lower Town Creek Road in Flintstone. Thirty-year old Michael Dockery is accused of taking a 2004 Jeep without authorization earlier in the day on Sunday. He lost control of the Jeep, traveled fifty feet over an embankment, and the vehicle came to rest on its side. It was destroyed. He was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending against him.

Portion Of  Oldtown Road to be Closed
A portion of Oldtown Road will be closed, beginning Thursday for about 30 days. The eastbound lane of Oldtown Road, from Grand Avenue to Wempe Drive will be closed to thru traffic. Traffic will be one-way, westbound during the period. Drivers are asked to use caution in the work zone, obey traffic control devices and follow detour routes for westbound travel. Motorists also should expect delays during working hours.

Untaxed Cigarettes Found
About $40,000 in untaxed cigarettes were found in a van that was stopped for a speeding violation on Interstate 68 in Grantsville. About 700 cartons of untaxed cigarettes were being transported from Louisville, Kentucky to New York City. Arrested were 25-year old Mohamed Diol of Columbus, Ohio; 25-year old Cherif Diallo of New York City; and 21-year old Hawa Kanoute, also of New York. The Maryland Comptroller’s Office also assisted with the investigation.
