Frostburg Man Killed in Somerset County Crash
Frostburg resident Anthony Michael David Winter was killed in a single-car crash in Somerset County this past weekend. He was a passenger in a car, driven by Ronald Lee Streets. He lost control of the car on a curve, and it rolled over; both were thrown from the vehicle, and neither was wearing a safety belt. The accident happened on Route 160 in the Wellersburg area. Streets suffered what are being termed “major” injuries in the crash.
Man Remains Jailed on Bond
Pittsburgh resident John Whittingham remains in the Garrett County jail, after allegedly hitting a police vehicle and running from police over the weekend. Whittingham was allegedly driving in an erratic manner and without an inoperable brake light. He was also allegedly not wearing a seat belt. Police pursued the car for several miles, and at one point, he turned and hit a Garrett County Sheriff’s vehicle. He was arrested and jailed on $50,000 bond.
Woman Cited for Failure to Yield in Weekend Accident
Seventy-four year old Marlene Bittner of Mount Savage was cited for failure to yield right of way in a two-vehicle collision over the weekend at the entrance to D’atri’s Restaurant in LaVale. She had pulled into the path of a motorcycle, driven by Ellerslie resident Steven Bonner. He hit her car on the driver’s side, rear passenger door., He was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries, while Ms. Bittner was not injured.
State Police Investigate Garrett County Burglary
The McHenry Barrack of the Maryland State Police is investigating an attempted burglary at 57 Gorman Steyer Road in Oakland. Sometime over the weekend, an unknown person or persons tried to enter the residence. The suspect also moved a vehicle that was parked at the residence, and parked it at a different location on the property. Berkeley Springs Man Killed in Collision
Berkeley Springs resident David Wayne Mccumbee was killed Saturday afternoon, when he hit a tractor-trailer, head-on at the Potomac River Bridge on Route 522. Mccumbee crossed into the southbound lane, and hit a truck, driven by Jeffrey Edward Martin of Petersburg, Virginia. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor. Mr. Martin sustained no injuries in the accident. The bridge on Route 522 was closed for about three hours. Authorities from both Maryland and West Virginia conducted the investigation.
Board Approves 5% Tuition Increase in West Virginia
The West Virginia Board of Governors has approved a five per cent increase for tuition and fees, effective this fall. The tuition increases amount to $145 more per semester for resident undergraduates and $449 more for non-residents on the main campus in Morgantown. The increases are slightly smaller at Potomac State College in Keyser, where both resident and non-resident undergraduates at Potomac State will pay $72 more per semester.
