Attorney Appointed to Shirey Defense Team

An attorney from Duncansville, Pennsylvania has been appointed to the legal team, representing Mark Shirey, formerly of Cumberland. Shirey is accused of fatally shooting Michael Simpson nearly a year ago. Bedford County District Attorney Bill Higgins says he will seek the death penalty against Shirey. The attorney, Thomas Hooper, is a penalty-phase specialist who will be used if Shirey is convicted of first-degree murder.

 

Man Arrested in Mall Assault

A Slanesville, West Virginia man has been arrested in connection with the assault of a 77-year old man at Sears in the Country Club Mall Monday afternoon. Forty-one year old Chanin Allison Clark has been charged with assault and is in custody in West Virginia, pending extradition to Maryland. Additional charges are pending and additional arrests are anticipated. The victim was treated at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center and was released. The investigation is continuing by the Maryland State Police and the C3I unit.

 

Multi-Vehicle Accident on Willowbrook Road

Four vehicles were involved in an accident yesterday afternoon on Willowbrook Road, in the vicinity of Country Club Road. Nineteen year old Alyssa Butler was traveling south on the roadway, and struck a vehicle that was making a turn onto Country Club Road. That vehiclewas operated by 32-year old Patricia Walker of Cumberland. A northbound vehicle was being operated by William Michaels ofCumberland; he tried to avoid the accident and struck Butler’s vehicle, causing it to roll over and slide into another, operated by Billie Jenkins of Paw Paw. Walker was taken to the hospital for treatment, and Willowbrook Road was closed for about two hours.

 

“Stop The Shift” Press Conference Held

A plan to shift teacher pensions to county governments is being proposed by Governor Martin O’Malley, and a local press conference to “Stop the Shift” was held yesterday. About 50 people attended the conference attended, including Allegany and Garrett County officials and representatives of the Allegany County Library System, which are covered by the pension system. Governor O’Malley’s plan would have the counties shoulder the burden of about half the teacher pension liabilities.

 

Garrett, Allegany County Drilling to Affect Washington County?

Washington County hosted an environmental presentation Monday at Hagerstown Community College, and one of the items of discussion was Marcellus Shale drilling in Garrett and Allegany counties. Drilling there might affect recreation in Washington County, including fishing, hunting, hiking and snowmobiling, according to Maryland Environmental officials. At this point there is no drilling in Maryland, but Pennsylvania has permitted the practice of drilling into the shale to access the gas.

 

Cumberland City Police, Mineral Sheriff’s Office Involved in Chase

Both Cumberland City Police officers and the Mineral County Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit, during which a number of traffic violations were observed Monday night. The vehicle was located on the Canal Parkway, passed by the marked units and continued onto South Mechanic Street, and to the area of the Atlantic Broadband building. The driver, 47-year old Kimberly Malone of Fort Ashby was taken into custody. She faces several traffic violations, and also several drug charges as well. She was held on $3,000 bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.

 

City Names Economic Development Coordinator

The city of Cumberland has named a new economic development director, who will begin his duties onMarch 19th. Shawn Hershberger, a graduate of Bishop Walsh School and Frostburg State University, has worked in West Virginia, and was also a community development specialist for the city of Frostburg. He replaces Brenda Smith, who is now the executive director of the Greater Cumberland Committee.

 

Details on Fatal Washington County Crash Released

Charlotte, North Carolina resident Robert Clay Sanderson was killed, and a Williamsport, Maryland woman was injured in a single vehicle accident yesterday morning on Sharpsburg Pike in Washington County. Sanderson was driving a 2007 Ford Focus, with passenger Kelsey Michele Gray, when he failed to negotiate a turn. The car left the road, overturned and came to rest in a field. Speed was possibly a factor in the crash. While Sanderson was wearing a seat belt, Gray was not. The roadway was closed for about 3-1/2 hours yesterday morning.

 

Somerset Officer Assaulted by Suspect

A 31-year old Boswell man, Michael Howlett, is facing charges of burglary and assault in Somerset County. Howlett  was being taken to the county jail early Monday in connection with a burglary charge. He allegedly became belligerent, pulled away from his escorts and assaulted a Somerset police officer. The additional charges were filed against him Monday morning.

 

Voter Registration Deadline march 13th

The deadline to register to vote or change party affiliation for the 2012 Presidential Primary is March 13th. That is also the deadline to request a polling place change. The 2012 Presidential Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, April 3rd; the general election is set for Tuesday, November 6th. Early voting will begin on the second Saturday before the election, through the Thursday before the election.
