State Police Standoff
Several agencies are on the scene of a barricade situation on Spruce Street in Cresaptown.A "911" call last night, around 11:30 alerted the Maryland State Police to gunshots at the home. When troopers tried to approach the home, additional gunshots were heard coming from inside the residence. State Police are atttempting to make contact with the 36-year old man, who is believed to be there by himself. No further shots were fired since the intial call last night.
Flanigan Chosen As Mayor
Former Frostburg Public Safety Commissioner Robert Flanigan has been sworn in as Mayor at a special council meeting yesterday. flanigan will fill the term of former Mayor Arthur Bond, who retired on July 5th, after more than 30 years of public service. Flanigan had served three years as commissioner public safety, and had previously spent 20 years as a police officer in Frostburg.
Trimble Dies Suddenly
Former Fort Hill High School and NFL standout Steve Trimble died suddenly yesterday in his office at Bishop Denis O'Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia. He was 53 years old. A 1976 graduate of Fort Hill, Trimble is survived by his wife, four sons, his father and three brothers. He is considered to be one of the greatest athletes from the Cumberland area, having played at the University of Maryland and several seasons in the NFL.
Search Ongoing for Superintendent
There are no fewer than six school superintendent positions open in the state of Maryland, and one of those is in Garrett County. Wendell Teets announced his retirement at the end of the 2010-2011 school year in April. Garrett County'sexecutive director of instruction, Sue Waggoner, is acting superintendent,and will remain in that capacity for the coming school year.
