LEGISLATORS ASK FOR INVESTIGATION

State Senator George Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel have written a letter,  asking Attorney General Doug Gansler to look into, quote, "alleged wrong doing and misappropriation of funds" that resulted in the closure of the McCoole Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. Former members of the department have asked Gansler to look into a number of issues,  including an investigation of the matter. Copies of the letter have been sent to both State's Attorney Michael Twigg and the Allegany County Commissioners.

 

AUDITORIUM TO BE PART OF NEW SCHOOL

The architectural firm, designing the new Allegany High School, says that due to savings from the demolition work of the former Sacred Heart Hospital, a new, $3 million auditorium could be added to the school. Superintendent David Cox says he hopes additional savings will be found, once bidding is finished for the new facility, scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.

 

MAN ARRESTED, HELD WITHOUT BOND

Cumberland resident Nathan Frye is being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center, after being arrested on a breaking and entering charge, which was a violation of his probation. Frye is accused of kicking in the door of a residence in the 400-block of Arch Street; he didn't take anything and ran when he encountered the victim. He made an appearance in District Court, before being ordered held without bond.

 

OPEN CONTAINER LEADS TO ARREST

Cumberland resident Joseph Edward Cody is being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on $8,000 bond, following his arrest on Wednesday. Police originally contacted him for having an open container of alcohol in the area of Park Street. It was also learned that police had two active arrest warrants for him, one for failure to appear in court in 2010, and the other for second-degree assault, fraud and identity theft related to a stolen credit card. The latter charges were filed, following a citizen complaint from earlier in the month.

 

OAKLAND MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING PURSUIT

Oakland resident Jacob Lynch has been charged with drunken driving and attempting to elude police, after he failed to stop for police in the Deer Park area Wednesday night. Lynch faces a number of charges, but was released yesterday, after posting $2500 bond. Police received a complaint of a possibly intoxicated driver, and he was arrested after a brief pursuit.

 

FIRE DESTROYS TRUCKS

A fire was reported Wednesday at Carl Belt, Incorporated on Milner Avenue in Bowling Green. The fire started while a diesel fuel tank was being welded in the back of a pick-up truck. The fire spread to a forklift truck, and damaged an exterior wall light. Firefighters remained on the scene for an hour and a half.

 

ALLEGANY COUNTY FAIR OPENS TOMORROW

The 29th annual Allegany County Fair opens tomorrow. Although the fair has been a part of Allegany County since 1869, the county began sponsoring it in 1985. Kevin Kaummauf, manager of the fair, says a new ride from Reithoffer attractions-called "Air Race," is making its national debut here. tomorrow's  events include a demo derby; there will be a food drive on Sunday, sponsored by Reithoffer.Kamauff says planning for the 2015 fair will be done during this year's events.

 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ASSIST WITH CLINIC

The Allegany County Health Department is looking for volunteers to assist with much needed clinical services to Western Maryland and the surrounding region. The Appalachian Mountain Innovative Readiness Training will take place at the Allegany County Fairgrounds from August 13th through the 21st, and event organizers are now scheduling volunteers to participate as data entry/clerical assistants, general clinic support, veterinary clinic support, patient guides and parking assistants. A web-based form has been created to register interested volunteers, and can be found at "www.tinyurl.com/IRTVolunteers." COUNCIL MEMBER NAMED AS URBAN RENEWAL COMMISSIONER

Newly-elected Keyser City Council member Jennifer Bennett has been named the head of the re-created Urban Renewal and Development Commissioner. The current council members will remain in their present positions. One of Bennett's duties will be to work with the city building inspector to help fight blight in the city.

 

HOGAN TO USE PUBLIC CAMPAIGN MONEY

Republican gubernatorial nominee Larry Hogan says he'll use public campaign finance money for his general election run, a move that could tap out the state's fund unless it's replenished. He'll be eligible for about $2.6 million to spend on his campaign, and will be limited to that amount. Both the state central committee for the Republican party and the local central committees could spend an additional $1.8 million each to help Hogan's campaign.

 

W. VA. SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR NAMED

The West Virginia Association of School Administrators has named Pendleton County Superintendent Doug Lambert as the State Superintendent of the Year. He will represent the Mountain State at the National Superintendent of the Year Competition in San Diego, California in February. Lambert has been the superintendent in Pendleton County since 2005, and had previously served as principal for the Pendleton County Middle/High School, beginning in 2002.

 

PRESTON COUNTY REGAINS SCHOOL CONTROL

The Preston County School System is being returned to local control, after West Virginia seized control in 2009, after a number of problems were discovered with finances, facilities, and general leadership. An audit team reviewed the system earlier this year, and says that leadership of the county board of education was one of the reasons local control was returned. The Preston County School system at one time had a $1.5 million deficit, but that has been reduced to below $60,000.
